Third mast being demolished

The last of the three 150ft self-supporting steel masts erected at the Awarua Radio Station in 1941 will be demolished on Saturday, April 23.

The No. 2 Troop of the Third Field Squadron Dunedin, under the command of Second Lieutenant WF Thomson, will do the work with explosives, Mr WB ten Kley, supervising engineer in the Post Office, said yesterday.

Last year, the other two masts were demolished by the same unit.

New masts of a different structure were erected. They are 120 feet high and are made of galvanised steel.

Mr ten Kley said there was no hurry to replace the last mast, but work would begin as soon as possible after its demolition.

The old masts were condemned by the Ministry of Works and Development about five years ago.
